Hair extensions are pieces of natural or artificial hair that are attached to a person’s real hair to add volume and length. If you invest in hair extensions, you probably want to keep them looking good as long as possible. Whether your extensions are made from synthetic or real hair, you’ll need special products to deal with them. The key to make them last longer lies in how fast your hair grows and how well you take care of them ,just like regular hair extensions need to be washed, conditioned and groomed to help maintain shine, strength and elasticity.
Instructions
1 Stay away from dandruff shampoos and harsh shampoos that contain sulfates, since they can deteriorate the extension bonds. Keep conditioner away from the bonds as much as possible; they can actually loosen the bonds and even slip off. Gentle shampoos are best, Shampoo and condition the hair extensions at least twice a week to keep them clean and free of residue like dust, oil and sweat. Dirt and oil can cause extensions to become tangled and messy.
2 Heat tools: If you are addicted to using heated tools, it’s best to use ionic irons and hair dryers. Never place the heat directly on the bonds or you risk irreparable melting.
3 A really moisturizing conditioner. Remember you will not use apply this conditioner to your roots, but your ends will need a good product to keep them hydrated.
4 Use a leave-in conditioner after every wash to keep hair extensions hydrated. Proper hydration fortifies and strengthens hair extensions, making them less prone to breakage. Thus, they will last longer and be in a better condition.
5 It is recommended to brush your hair at least twice a day. Don’t brush too much as this will cause the extensions to fall out. Don’t be afraid to pull the extensions out — it’s not going to happen. If you don’t brush your hair, your natural hairs that you normally lose (about 100 a day) can get tangled in your extensions. Also, your hair will become matted and cause a painful removal process. Always comb in a downward motion. Start from the bottom and carefully work your way up with gentle strokes. This method prevents breakage.
6 Use protective styling products that shield hair extensions from heat and environmental damage. Spray a fine mist of the protective product onto your extensions every day before you style your hair or go outside to brave sun and weather exposure. Try Kerastase Resistance Double Force Multi Protective Spray.
7 Store hair extensions in a cool, dry place when not in use. Excessive heat and moisture can damage the extensions.
