“I could not count the number of wigs we use on that show if I wanted to…” Sophie Turner admitted!
Game of Thrones, the blockbuster show, is all about Jon Snow, Dragons, and hair. This is me being a die-hard fan of the show! We know pretty everything about the dragons and might Jon Snow, but the majority of the facts about the hair was a lie. Recently in her interview with Refinery29, Sofie Turner aka Sansa Stark unveiled the darkest of secrets i.e. all the characters in the show wear wigs. The show is absolutely crushing the wigs’ game with elaborate braids and lusciously wavy locks. However, it’s not just the female characters, but male characters in the show are also known to display the use of wigs!
Fashionistas are obsessed with the glorifying plot and stunning hairstyles of the ass-kicking characters on the show. Kevin Alexander, show’s hair designer, revealed the truth about wigs used in the show. He told that all the chosen hair colors and styles were symbolic. This is the secret behind Daenery’s’ killer braids which symbolized her being a part of Dothraki tribe. Similar is for Cersei’s style and many other characters.
Who used wigs in Game of Thrones?
Emilia Clarke aka Daenerys
As already mentioned, Daenerys kept on changing her wig with her changing character. First a Targaryen, then a Dothraki and then a Targaryen again! The frizzy wig of Desert Daenerys looked very messy but went well with the character and demand.
Later on, when she started conquering cities, her hairstyle changed into braids and permanent waves. This Daenerys is quite opposite to what we used to see in the initial seasons.
However, Emilia Clarke reveals that Game of Thrones nearly ruined her hair because she had to bleach them for the final season.
Sophie Turner aka Sansa Stark
Just like her evolving character, Sansa Stark had a new wig with evolving braids every season. Turner wore a full-time wig throughout the season. Her red hair in the initial seasons changed to blonde later on. However, the choice of her wigs went really well with her divisive character.
Kathren Headey aka Cersei Lannister
Cersei Lannister’s character transformed throughout the show and so did her wigs. Thehair started from frizzy locks and ended on the tight curls we see in the season finale. She also rocked those amazing hair updos which reflected the finesse of her character.
Philip McCann aka Clegane aka The Hound
The Hound did justice to his character with his messy wig and burn scars. However, he never looked bathed! Having been burnt by the younger brother doesn’t leave your hair permanently stringy. For sure, the hair scientist didn’t consider this fact and made the character wear this messy wig throughout.
Natalie Dormer aka Margaery at the Purple wedding
The Stunner Margaery in Season 2 Game of Thrones wears this flat and mousy wig with a middle-part. The wig was supposed to make her look ugly consistent with her character. The wig couldn’t do much good to her despite her seductively beautiful looks.
Later, the Margery of King’s Landing wore an entirely different wig with a stylish hairdo. This wig did true justice to her lovely looks. This wig must be why Cersei got jealous of her.
Maisie Williams aka Arya Stark
In season 1, Arya Stark used the boy cut wig which looked like a dead squirrel. However, it did give her the desired Tom-boy look. later, Maisie chopped off her original locks for the look which was indeed the best decision.
Hempstead Wright aka Bran
Here again, comes the dead squirrel-like hair. I am not very clear about what the hair designer was trying to portray about Bran’s character through this wig. Whatever is the reason, this wig succeeded in making a special place in the show.
Ed Skrein aka Daario
Daario’s ugly wig in Season 3 resembles that of Margaery’s wig. The messy hair is what must have led him being replaced by Michael Huisman. However, not to forget, the wig did give this character the fighter look he was cast to play.
Patrick Duggan aka BalonGreyJoy
The king of the Iron Island, BalonGreyJoy, wore that awful ratty hair wig in the show. However, the wig goes well with his dirty character. The wig must have been worth an iron price.
Van Houten aka Melisandre
Melisandre was personally my favorite. Her fiery Red wig always looked gorgeous. The wig was consistent with her ethereal and imposing character. The red hair on her porcelain skin created a wild contrast and no other wig could have made a better option for her.
Kit Harrington aka Jon Snow
Jon Snow DID NOT WEAR WIG. However, I am still mentioning his name because why not? Fans love him! He revealed that he was not allowed to even touch his hair throughout the cast of this season because he had to carry his looks. No wonder, he looked hot and spicy!
Jennifer Ehle aka Catelyn Stark
Although she spent a short time on Game of Thrones set, fans could easily spot her auburn wig. Her daughter, Sansa Stark has a similar red wig. Their genes got into their wigs too! Catelyn’s simple hairstyle went really well with her soft yet formed character.
A s already said, it’s not just the female characters who were made to wear wigs in Game of thrones. Certain male characters also used them in one way or the other. Some wore them on their heads while others on their beards. Sophie Turner stated that next time you go through the cast of Game of Thrones, observe the male characters thoroughly and find what’s different with their hair. All of the Game of Throne’s hair secrets are out and the fans are all about it.
